As a member of the Chandler’s farm located in the town of Black Oak, he is expected to help harvest cotton. However, in September 1952, there was an excessive amount of cotton that needed to be harvest so the Chandlers hired two groups of people, the Mexicans and hill people also known as the Spruills. That year after the arrival of the two groups, seven year Luke’s world is flooded with secrets and mysteries. His world begins to turn when he falls in love with Tally an older female member of the Spruills. A child is born through wedlock. A few brutal murders leave the people of Black Oak whispering and in suspense. And someone is anonymously painting the rusty clap boards of the Chandler’s farm house to a sparkling white.
